Instruments: Violin
My teaching style depends upon the student! I love reaching set goals, and I verbally check in to take the students feelings, thoughts, and playing into account. We come to a decision together, and I am not the final say on any matter. I see lessons as a collaboration, as I have much to learn from this experience as well. I prepare the student to be adaptable, and to use the skills as effectively in practice as in performance and lessons. Read More
Instruments: Flute Clarinet
Allison G, Clarinet Secondary instruments: viola, violin, flute, saxophone, oboe, percussion (especially keyboard percussion such as marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, and especially Latin percussion with emphasis on salsa), bag pipes, and piano. I have been teaching privately for 27 years. Prior to getting my undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University; where I studied with James Pyne. I studied music at Indiana University during the summers. I also hold a Masters from Northern Kentucky University. However, I have done post graduate work at University of Cincinnati, Cleveland State, and Kaplan University. It is said, as a music teacher you get one great one in your life. Read More
Instruments: Flute Piccolo
I assign method books, etudes (studies), and repertoire appropriate for the playing level of the student. My teaching emphasizes fundamentals first for students of every level. This fundamental study supports students in their pursuit of their musical and artistic goals. The method books I recommend students begin with are in the Rubank series, either Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Etudes to supplement will be the Cavally Melodious and Progressive studies. When students reach an appropriate level, we will select repertoire for their first recital performance! Read More
Instruments: Voice
I like to create very clear imagery that builds over time. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician. I like to use the music that each student loves, which allows them to learn while still keeping things fun and interesting. Read More
Instruments: Flute Piccolo
As stated previously, I have had roughly 3 years prior experience of teaching. I have taught a variety of ranges of players such as very beginner students and more advanced high school students. Why should I take lessons from Emily? As soon as you walk into my studio, you will be instantly included in my flute family! This means that you will be in a supportive environment that promotes quality music making. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Viola Music Keyboard
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for violin students and piano adventures for piano students. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. During the lessons, I'll also let them come up with their own music or I'll play a duet with students. That way they're not only learning the instruments as well as being creative. Read More
