Goals and ambitions are set at the beginning of taking lessons and as we progress in learning, After a certain amount of lessons, I'll do a review lesson to see what the student has retained, what we need to focus on, and assess skill level to that point. I was the Concert Choir section leader in College and found leadership and spreading my love for music to be exhilarating! I encourage all of my students to set a reasonable practice schedule to get themselves into the habit of practicing and really reaching their full potential as a student. I think my approach to teaching piano is highly individualized. What motivates one student will not necessarily motivate another. Brief example: I currently have a student who likes to give me really "hard" high-fives after he has accomplished something. While he is adorable and he will work really hard to give me that high-five; this wouldn't work on many other students. I often teach by using a book of my choice as a lesson guide.I generally start every lesson by practicing finger exercises by running up and down the neck and also practice alternating the fingers with the picking hand.This is proper technique that will develop great speed and also great tone.After the exercises we go through the lessons outlined in the book.At the end of each lesson,I give my students, assignments to practice in their spare time ,which are based on the exercises from book.They are usually things that we have gone through during the lessons.I encourage my students to call or text me if it's something that they don't understand.I am more than happy to be of assistance.
