For beginning students I like to find out how much experience they have had in music and find out what they want to get out of these lessons. If they are just starting out I'll start with the basics, how to hold a drumstick, the parts of the drum set, correct posture, etc. I believe that all students regardless of age and level should learn how to read music. My students will not only be learning how to play drums by listening to bands that they like but also by reading drum sheet music and learning basic theory. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students developing as a trumpet player. However, each student has his/her own pace. I look to provide a good atmosphere in my classes and work in the way that the student is looking for. With compassion and engagement, I seek to share my love of music with others. A violinist since age six, I initially majored in violin performance and later music education at Wichita State University, where I performed in the Wichita State University Symphony Orchestra. Highlights from my time here include performing with the band Kansas and with the St. Petersburg String Quartet at Carnegie Hall. My four years playing in the Navy was an experience in learning that could not have been accomplished elsewhere. I traveled the world performing concerts everywhere and finally ending up being the lead trumpet with the then brand new Orlando Naval Training Center Show Band. After leaving the Navy, I formed my own show band and toured the US for five years, playing night clubs and backing up such entertainers as The Four Aces, Joanne Castle, Bobby Rydell, Fats Domino, Dick Contino and Al Hirt. My student, no matter what age, starts with light vocalizing, lip trills, humming etc. for young students I usually pick a light song and work on basics using the song as an exercise. My older students have to work a little more, exercising scales, monitoring placement, support, palette work. A song is picked by me and the student together. Read More
