For students older than 10 years of age, I will typically move into introducing basic chord and scale playing. I have found that students who are in the middle school to high school range have already developed an appreciation for some form of pop music, be it modern or older material from decades past. Even though all students require different needs, I will usually start my lessons by warming up the voice with different exercises. After that, I will work on repertoire with the student. My favorite book for beginning singers is the 24 Italian Songs Arias. A lot of good habits and technique can be learned through repertoire. In my voice lessons, I'll focus on breathing, resonance, singer's health, good practice habits, musicianship, pronunciation/diction, and performance. Read More

For students of all skill levels, I begin by communicating with them about their goals and continue on with a gentle warm up. I then guide the student through various exercises that are designed to improve and strengthen specific areas of the voice, specific registers, problem areas, and so on. If the student has a particular singing or vocal obstacle that they are experiencing, we will give extra time and attention to creating steps that will improve those issues. Read More

I like a light, fun atmosphere during lessons, one that reflects the learning style and personality of each student. There are some not-so-fun things about learning music (practice schedules and repetition) but there are plenty of resources out there to help students stay interested and motivated.
