While I am new to teaching, I am hoping to create a comfortable environment where students do not feel rushed to complete pieces or practices, and we will always move at the students pace. If a student is not yet ready to move on to the next piece, then we will continue polishing whatever they need before moving on. I like to use custom lesson plans. I evaluate the student's playing and ask what they want to improve on and/or want to learn. Based off of this, I might use rhythmic study exercises from Ted Reed's "Syncopation" or hand patterns from the book "Stick Control", playing on both a practice pad and the kit. I like to have students play a simple 8th note groove, backbeat on 2 & 4 and incorporate bass drum precision exercises, eventually using different hi hat patterns. Read More

My teaching style is to be sensitive to each student. Each person has a different relationship and understanding of music. I try to identify and accommodate the ways in which the student learns best. Some students need explicit instruction and to be pushed, others need gentle guidance with time and space to work things out for themselves. I typically use a book for the basis of reference, and then encourage the student to go beyond the notes on the page.
