I studied in Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, and Mathematics, but music and teaching have always been in my life, teaching students throughout high school and college at UGA as a second job. I took trips to Mexico over the summers from 2002-2005 playing music for children and students in between manual labor mission work. Alben began studying classical piano at the age of 7 and guitar at the age of 15 at the Rhode Island Philharmonic School in Providence, RI. At the age of 14, he began studying under Dr. Irina Tchantceva, participating in various festivals and competitions around the New England area. In university, he studied under Dr. Sandra Hebert and Dr. Ralf Gawlick for performance and composition, respectively and graduated from Boston College with his B.A in Music with a concentration in Performance and Composition, as well as a degree in Political Science in May, 2019. When I was growing up beginning piano lessons books were limited. I used the familiar John Thompson series that was quite good. I typically use the Alfred method, although I still like John Thompson, and I also like the Faber method. For adults, I like to use the Alfred books that are specifically for them. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. For beginning students I try to go slow and make sure that they get the fundamentals and essentials down. My beliefs are that learning each stage well will help expedite the process of learning and playing later in life. At some point shortly after the fundamentals we will begin on solo literature and possibly duet literature.
