My teaching experience comes from coaching sectionals, and giving private instruction and classes over all-state etudes and solo repertoire to other students during high school. I have been in teaching roles for other students since I was about 14 years old. I believe that even more than my past teaching and mentoring experience, being a dutiful student throughout my life as a trombonist has shaped my ideals on teaching. My first and foremost goal is to inspire a student to want to learn and thrive in their instrument. If I can do this, my job along with theirs, becomes that much easier. I try and do this by heavily incorporating the music that they identify the most with while strengthening their technique with a classical foundation. I will first understand what direction the student wants to go musically, whether it be playing chords and singing or being entirely a solo guitarist. From there we can understand what style they want to be playing as I would encourage having a basic understanding of all musical styles. I will also encourage them to have a basic understanding of music theory, for I believe this to be very important in order to understand concepts of music and be able to communicate them. Read More

One of the many advantages to private instruction, and what makes me so passionate about it, is that each student can move at their own speed. Private lessons should be tailored to the individual, so that the student can form a solid foundation. I believe in teaching students with encouragement and positivity, so that playing an instrument can be an enjoyable challenge, rather than a wretched slog. For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material.
