For piano ages 7-12: I typically start with Primer Piano Adventures or Level 1. I also use Keith Snell Scale Skill Levels for skill and chord practices which is helpful for all kinds of music! For guitar and ukulele: Hal Leonard guitar and ukulele method. These books also teach reading the notes in sheet music and understanding how to play them on the guitar or ukulele, as well as including a tab. Read More

My teaching experience began when I completed my degree in Music Education 10 years ago. Since that time I have been teaching private lessons to students of all ages. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to meet my students where they are in their development, and prescribe exercises, repertoire, and information that will help the student with each of their individual needs and goals. I use classical technique as a foundation for healthy singing, but absolutely love performing and teaching many other genres of music. Read More

In teaching my students, I prefer to teach them to "play by ear", because when they learn chords and songs, they are usually able to play a snog by memory after hearing it a time or two. I not only show them the chords, fret board, how to hold the guitar properly, how to tune the guitar; etc. but, I also issue them handouts of guitar chord illustrations, fret board charts, and chord changes with words to songs for them to practice on between lessons. As a flute player, where would we be without the teachings of Trevor Wye, Marcel Moyse, Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert? Of course, I will start by determining where they are at, a test, so to say. For the beginners, I like to start with the Trevor Wye beginners books. As they grow more advanced, we will look at separate books such as the 24 melodic studies by Moyse and intermediate books that are also by Wye. Read More

I went to work for various school districts while keeping up my saxophone chops playing in country, funk, Tejano, rock roll, pop, and just about every other kind of ensemble one can think of. When I went to grad school I made principal saxophone in the wind ensemble and played at Carnegie Hall! While I was there (grad school) I taught a woodwind methods class and the freshman saxophone studio. Read More

I believe we are most productive when we keep a positive mindset. I try to let encouragement be the foundation of my teaching. I truly want you to reach your highest singing potential, which will happen with consistent practice. Each lesson will consist of vocal exercises which should be recorded so that the student can practice with it throughout the week. And then we will work together to choose songs that will help reinforce your new, healthy technique. Read More

I usually start all of my piano students from the Alfred series. Those that are more advanced will complete the curriculum quicker.. Alfred seems to offer a more detailed instruction technique. It offers step by step instructions. The student can almost teach himself. For guitar I use the Everyday guitar method. This method introduces each string at a time. By the end of the book, you will be playing songs on each string. Read More
