I approach each student as an individual. Some students take things slow and steady, while others I can barely fit enough into their weekly lessons to keep them happy, and either way is just fine. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to make myself obsolete - I aim to teach my students how to learn, how to be critics of themselves for more effective practice time, and eventually, how to either need a teacher that can take them to more advanced levels, or to play without a teacher. I have been teaching privately part time for the past 4 years working with students in grades K-12. My main goal in lessons is for my students to not only succeed at a new skill once, but to be confident in their ability to repeat their success in practice at home and at our next lessons. I encourage positive feedback and positive "self-talk" as a means of boosting self-efficacy. I think an important part of learning is goal setting and outlining specific, achievable steps to reach that goal so that progress can be tracked and the process of learning can become less ambiguous. My approach to teaching is holistic, positive, and gentle and influenced by my interest in music psychology. I begin by learning about the student's background, interests, and goals. Since goals can change as we gain experience and skill, I help my students discover the possibilities available to them as they study. One of the most important parts of my teaching is to help students learn how to practice in healthy, positive, consistent manner and to develop faith that persistent healthy practice will yield life-long fruits. I am in my late 40's, married, and the father of a crazy 9-year-old daughter. I started studying music on piano at the age of five with my mother (also a musician). I move from piano to alto sax, and continued to play it through to college, later switching to tenor. At age twelve, I started playing electric bass and have continued up to the present day. I started on acoustic bass at fifteen, and guitar when I was 30 years old. Read More

I have been teaching violin for 30 years, starting as a bluegrass and Irish fiddle teacher in a folk music store run by a family of performers who were related to the von Trapps of The Sound of Musicfame. Since then, I have tried to continually grow as a performer, musician, and teacher. I have collected a vast amount of muic and resource materials along the way, so I am able to meet each student's needs--from child-friendly beginning repertoire, holiday music, fiddle tunes and jazz standards, to concertos and orchestral excerpts for youth and college orchestra auditions and beyond! I began teaching as a supervised and mentored Guided Practice Teacher, helping students learn to practice and become their own teacher. After a few years of that, I was deemed "Ready To Teach" by my supervisors and mentors. Today, my students have excelled in their Flute Performance degrees at top universities, placed in regional and national competitions and auditions, and developed a life-long love of music. Having studied with some of the world's best flutists and teachers, I have the tips, tricks, and tactics to make sure you learn quickly and properly, while still having fun! Read More
Instruments: Guitar
In guitar lessons with me, I generally go through a guitar book (the book varies depending on the students experience and what we decide to use) but mainly focus on what the student wants to learn. Learning the fundamentals of guitar will help the student learns what they want to learn, so that is applied to the lessons. A typical lesson with me goes as follows: Tune and warm up song (something the student is confident in). Read More
