Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student gain confidence in their voice. Singing can be very scary especially at first, but it is my passion to be a cheerleader of the singer. Singing is mostly a mental game, and my passion is to fight that one first. One can have all the technique in the world, but if they don't have confidence, musicality is thrown out the window. My teaching experiences have come from my time spent playing in a variety of ensembles in the different colleges that I attended. I was often asked to lead groups in rehearsal and this was where my teaching experiences first began. It started with my colleges Big Band and then with a Saxophone Quartet. Being able to lead a group of musicians and helping them get better everyday was the most fulfilling feeling I got during my time in school and pushed me to try my hand at teaching younger students. For beginner students, I often use the Essential Elements series, or a similar book. Work on fundamentals should be regular. Some of the books I like to use for this are: Clarke, Schlossberg, Bai Lin, Irons, Stamp, and more. Solos and etude books are important to work out of as well. Early etude books include Getchell and Small, and later etude books include Bousquet, Longinotti, Brandt, and Charlier. By looking at all its parts we can begin learning the fundementals and getting to a point of confidence in a solo or ensemble setting. Voice in particular is a difficult thing to learn, since the mechanisms are internal and difficult to see as well as hard to control directly.
