I started teaching horn in 1976 and have taught ever since. Students are to perform not only a recital if possible or play a solo as part of a musical program but to play in a musical organization if possible. I've been playing flute for many many decades. I keep it fresh by continuing to learn more about music. It's an endless well of possibilities. I currently play with a jazz quartet. I've played flute since i was 9 years old and currently favor the alto flute, with its rich, lower tone. I play and teach both C flute (regular flute) and the alto flute. I believe that a strong foundation is essential for steady progress and confident performance. A comprehensive approach is my preference. Therefore, when I teach piano, I prefer Faber and Faber Piano Adventures paired with A Dozen a Day for added technique. Since many students in this school district are in band or orchestra, I usually use Essential Elements for Strings, Brass, and Woodwinds. I simply want my students to come into their first lesson wanting to learn more about their instrument and music. I want them to leave their final lesson feeling the same way, but at a more advanced level than when they first arrived. They don't need to be professional level when they leave, but I want them to feel as though they learned some valuable things as my student and want to either continue learning elsewhere or feel content about what they have learned and are ready to move on to other things. This allows me to focus on their unique abilities and interests while building a solid musical foundation. Individualized teaching is my passion.
