For students between the ages of 3 and 7, I typically use either the Little Mozarts method or the Birds and Dogs method. For students who are older, I use a combination of methods, including Alfred's, Bastien and Faber. I have also designed and used my own curriculum for students with special needs, including students who have autism, cerebral palsy, nerve damage, ADHD and for gifted students. I've been playing flute for many many decades. I keep it fresh by continuing to learn more about music. It's an endless well of possibilities. I currently play with a jazz quartet. I've played flute since i was 9 years old and currently favor the alto flute, with its rich, lower tone. I play and teach both C flute (regular flute) and the alto flute. I suggest playing for ten minutes at one time working through each exercise for those ten minutes before taking a rest for 20 minutes. Then move to the next etude or scale. Start with a consistent warm up in the middle of your range. The warm up should be the same every time wherein students can expand on their warm up on their own.
