Most of the students I've taught have had a background in music through singing in choirs, etc. Other students have had a limited musical background. At whatever the ability level or background, I always try to introduce appropriate solo repertoire to which the student can relate, as well as introducing songs that will aid in teaching proper vocal technique and proper diction. I am a lover of music that has always enjoyed sharing it with others. I have been involved in musical activities all through since grade school. I graduated with a Master of Music Arts with a specialty in teaching from Texas Woman's University so I could better share my love of music. I have also been in one choir or another over the years. I teach my students to practice a growth mindset. As musicians, I find that we can easily become perfectionists. While I think it is important to critique ourselves so we can improve, my policy is that my students critique themselves based on their own progress. For example, instead of comparing themselves to other students at an audition, I encourage them to compare themselves to who they were yesterday. I truly believe that students can more easily reach their full potential when they are focused on growth rather than competition against others. Read More

I have been teaching for over 30 years, and I love working with children. Regular practice is important so that students can see progress and reap the rewards that come with it. I meet the students where they are at, trying to work with their particular style of learning. My lessons are based in classical music, but we learn many different styles of music as they progress. The teaching association I belong to has four festivals a year, which I encourage my students to participate in, where they perform pieces and receive constructive feedback, helping them to grow as musicians and to become comfortable playing for others. For beginners, I use Rebecca Simonfalvi's called "Potential Contender." It is geared for young children starting out in band. For adults, I generally move between Trevor Wye's "Beginners book for the flute" or the Rubank Elementary Method. If needed, especially with the young, I generally have my students take notes of lessons. I also teach basic theory to give students a deeper understanding of the music. For the advanced student, the focus becomes about fine-tuning fundamentals, and learning repertoire that will propel them forward to the next level. Read More
