My lesson style varies depending on the student's learning style, personality, preferences, etc. I usually get a sense of the learning style of a given student within 3 or 4 lessons, and if I don't I have a special test to find out. Students learn best when the teaching favors their learning style and preferred pace. Some students like to take things slow, be methodical, and are very visual. Others may want to apply concepts at a faster pace, respond more to auditory examples, and like to jump around between topics. Read More

I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. This is a really fun way for the piano students to grasp the fundamentals and learn how to independently move each finger at different times. As the student progresses, I try to find out what kind of style they enjoy playing and advise which books to purchase next.
