With my piano students, I prefer to use John Thompson’s piano method books, along with performance study, listening, and impromptu music theory/acoustics lessons when the subjects arise. Depending on the practice habits of the student, they should have at least 2-3 non-method book solo pieces prepared within a year’s time. Each lesson is tailored to what he student enjoys, finds challenging, and ultimately will benefit from. My vocal students will find lessons crafted specifically to their current vocal abilities, working on a wholistic approach to singing including acting, prana, yoga, health and fitness, self confidence, lifestyle coaching, and of course, the act of singing! I am a three-time Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist, composer, and teacher. I am proficient on saxophone, clarinet, flute, upright bass, electric bass, and piano. In 2006, I graduated with a degree in Jazz Composition with an emphasis in Saxophone Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Since I specialize in teaching first time learners, I allow as much time needed to master fundamentals before advancement to anything else. It is key to build a strong foundation, this upholds most importance to me. Setting realistic goals for students and milestones will be made to set them up for success in the future. Incentives/awards will be gifted upon reaching certain milestones catered to the appropriate age. Learning is fun and should be approached in that way! Read More

I teach all levels and my methods depend on the age and skill level of each student. Everybody learns differently and has different musical goals so I stay open-minded and tailor my lessons on an individual basis. for children and beginners, I focus on technique and very basic theory to get them started playing the songs they like. For intermediate students, I assess thier current skil level and breadth of knowledge so i can then help them expand and solidify thier musical groundwork. Read More

My approach to lessons is one that is customized to the student. I don't believe in a one size fits all method. I use the same material and books that have helped me improve as well as customizable methods for each student. These methods include: learning how to process information effectively, how to retain the information and also how to excecute that information at any moment. I also help with the psychology of music learning and performing which is often overlooked. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my early college days, about twenty-two years ago. I have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last two decades. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for their instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
