I am a fully-certified music educator of over 20 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 35 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. For example, I enjoy using colored pencils to highlight articulation and dynamics. If a student is younger, I use stickers to help students keep track of where they are in the piece. I received her Bachelor of Science degree in political science and flute, graduating from the Ball State University honors college at age 20. I earned my masters degree and Ph.D in flute from New York University where I was the youngest woman to receive a Ph.D from the School of Arts and Sciences. A university professor for 12 years, I have been a faculty member of the University of New Haven where I taught flute, piano and economics in addition to teaching flute, music history and music theory at Southern Connecticut State University and South Central Community College. I like to create lesson plans around what kind of music the student wants to learn. For example, most young girls want to learn Disney princess songs. So I print them off their own copies of the songs that they had expressed an interest in learning. I feel like if the student is not interested in playing or singing the music that I am giving them it could be the best curriculum in the world, but it won't help them learn if they are not actively engaged in the music they are singing or playing.
