My teaching studio is equipped with two drums sets and practice pads to accommodate marching or drum set students.   I also have a full PA and two keyboards set up for piano students and accompanying purposes.  Each student is given an assignment for the week (or specified time) and will then pass off this lesson assignment (barrier) before receiving a new lesson.  Passing off not only includes demonstration of the lesson but also performing with me as I accompany them on the keyboards. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Alfreds Basic Piano Library method and theory books. Ideally, a new song is assigned every week and the student will practice daily. During lessons we will review the piece that the student has practiced, I will provide feedback, and we will move forward to a new skill. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

I generally will start off students with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Once the fundamentals from those books have been understood, I will start the students on repertoire that is appropriate for their level. There are two selected teaching methods that I confer with in order to select the most appropriate method for my students. For my beginning students, I select Schaum (Books 1-3) for piano lessons, and Benners Book One for theory lessons. The Schaum methods offers bright and color-coded books, which reflects that various learning levels. I attended seminars in Jazz Guitar with legendary guitarists Joe DiOrio, Tal Farlow and Jack Wilkins. My philosophy of teaching is to help the student play the music that he or she wants to play and give the student a practical understanding of the guitar and music theory. Since I have an Administrators degree and have concentrated on many Healthcare/Science classes regarding disabilities, I can tailor my lessons to students who may be dyslexic or have ADHD.
