I love to see kids progress in music and become excited about it!! My teaching style is very paced and hands on. If a student isn't getting something, I like to slow it down until they they do. I'm very complimentary and positive during lessons; this helps the student be confident. I also try to give the student a guideline on how to practice and how to pace themselves throughout this process. Read More

For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between keeping the student working on music that challenges them, and advances their technique, with the need to have fun and enjoy the playing of a musical instrument as a means of entertainment and relaxation. My approach to teaching music is holistic. I believe there are 3 important components that lead to mastery of the instrument: 1. Technique, 2. Artistry, 3. Comprehension. Technique: Understanding of the body and how it works at the piano. By this, I mean how to play using the weight of the body rather than brute force. Playing the piano does not require strong muscles or physical strength. It requires an intricate and fluid motion that comes from understanding how the hands/arms are connected to the rest of the body, and how they work together to produce sound from the piano. My teaching experience dates back to my early years in jr- college, My professors even referred students to me for guitar lessons. After graduating from Auburn University with a BS in Music education , I taught private lessons in my home. Performing throughout the United States, England and Canada was a great experience for me until my daughter was borne. After that I started teaching Music at home and at several music stores. Not only will I teach you how to play piano . . . I will teach you how to read and play printed music. Learning to "play by ear" only teaches you how to play a few songs . . . learning to read music opens the door to a vast library of printed piano music! In addition to your method book, we will work on technique (finger exercises for strength and flexibility), theory (what makes music work), and repertoire (performance pieces). Read More

I currently teach part time, with my main focus being on individual, case-by-case teachings and lessons. I have found that every student has different interests/passions and it is my job to further develop them. I will cater to your specific needs, whether it be an instrument, singing, or songwriting, with a high emphasis on practice, especially for beginner students. Most of all, I will make sure to keep it fun! Read More

My teaching philosophy is "exploration as a road to mastery." I help students build a repertoire they can perform. This tends to be a combination of songs they know and love, and songs that I introduce them to. I introduce the elements of music theory in relation to songs. Scales, harmony, and ear training are grasped better, and enjoyed more, once a student has context. My goal is to have each student feel safe in the learning process, while still pushing them out of their comfort zone. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
