I like to start out with the Hannon Book. That has various excercises that helps with note recognition. Worksheets will be given out with those as well. Teaching students HOW to read notes, and HOW to recognize them takes a few weeks so that's normally what i like to start with. Once they grasp those fundimentals, then we move on to learning songs they are familiar with such as London Bridge, This Old Man, Mary Had A Little Lamb etc. Read More

Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. For all of my students, I find out what they are interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly. I typically start with the Piano Adventures series and my own compositions. Once my students understand the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance or competition. All of my students get a complete musical education by learning theory, performance, and music history.
