I am a composer who plays several instruments, and my primary instrument is piano. From 2010 to 2012, I was a full-time,self-employed piano tutor serving the Paris, TX area, with several loyal clients. What makes me stand out as an educator are two things: 1. My strong personal conviction that anything may be taught to anyone, provided that there is a willingness to learn, and that the educator is able to effectively break down the given subject into its logical components, and 2. In order to succeed at the keyboard, a student's technique must be ahead of their literature. This is why I use a well-developed system of technical exercises that are easy to understand and implement that allows the student to quickly gain mastery of the instrument. These techniques were thoroughly developed and taught by my mentor, Dr. Jill Sprenger, and I have seen students of all types succeed with them. I also use a self-paced program of theory skills and ear-training exercises that complement the wide variety of literature that excites each student. Read More

By giving piano lessons, all kinds of music knowledges should be taught. I prefer focus on both performance skills and the art/music knowledge in general. Homework is always needed because being able to play piano is the goal of the students.I will have my students practice etude, sonata/sonatina,polyphony pieces and modern pieces at the same time. Homework will be pieces selected from these 4 types. On top of that, I let my students know more about the background of the piece, study the composer, study the history and stories. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start with the Faber Piano Adventures series. We also work on long-term pieces for festivals and recitals throughout the year if they are interested in playing for those. I strongly encourage them to participate in these, helping them to feel confident and secure in these performances. I will also pull in pieces from other methods or books when needed to fill in any gaps or work with any different learning styles. Read More
