The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. I have found that this is not only the most effective way for me to teach but also the most effective way to connect with students where they are and for them to learn at their own pace while also enjoying the process. For beginning young students, I typically start with Music Tree or Piano Adventure. Once the student has progressed, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, after seeing their level of playing, I would find the style of music that they are interested in. If students are interested in learning specific music pieces, we can focus on that until feeling comfortable and confident then move on to similar style so we can keep that interest going then move on to more advanced pieces. As a licensed teacher with experience teaching pretty much every age (1st grade-adult) and skill level of students, across a wide variety of subjects (English lit.-music theory), I have developed a music program that gets students learning fast -- and enjoying it! As much as I love making music -- being part of a group performing songs live is a huge thrill! -- that's not my profession... My profession is teaching. Read More

I adapt my methods to each student accordingly. Every person is unique and has a different taste in music. However I am strict in making sure that all my students understand the fundamentals of music. Ear Training, music theory, ability to read notation and tabs, understanding chords and voicing, how to count rhythms. I have a set list of songs I teach most of my students, as they help to develop technique and are usually well received by most students. Read More

Standing on stage with great musicians is the most effective way to learn music. That’s because music is an aural tradition, meaning music is taught by ear, often thru singing. Just like language. How did you learn to speak English? Not by reading books, but by jamming with words and speaking with masters of the language. Jamming (with notes or words) is the act of exchanging ideas with another person, a conversation. Read More

I like to start off with all my students--whether adult or child--by finding what music they are passionate about. I then use that information to create a practice routing/repetoire that will drive each individual to practice and grow as a musician. I encourage my students to not only practice often, but practice corectly. After all, practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Read More
