I start playing the piano when I was 5 and started playing oboe at the age of 8 in Guanran Catholic Music Elementary School in Taiwan- a school that taught music theory, ear-training, aural skills, music history, choir, and orchestra, in addition to regular academic classes. Throughout my life, I have performed as a solo and collaborative pianist, instrumental and vocal accompanist, oboist, choral singer, and conductor in various venues in US, Taiwan, China, and Italy. For most of my beginning piano students, I use the piano adventures series. They offer a clear and well paced curriculum with numerous supplemental resources in a variety of styles. For beginning music theory, I use the Berklee School of Music texts or the Benward and Saker textbooks as well as many videos and other resources to explore musical concepts. For singing, I use a variety of sight singing books, all depending on the age and experience of the student. Read More

I grew up in Colorado but have lived in California for the last 25 years. I have four daughters. I love teaching piano and seeing the progress my students make as they learn to play and to love the instrument as much as I do. I learned to play the piano at around age 11 and have been playing ever since. I play mostly for fun but I also play the piano and the organ for my church congregation, have accompanied many musical numbers including solos, choirs of all ages, high school performance groups. I believe in encouragement, fun and positive focus on the students progress at whatever speed that they progress. This makes each student look forward to each lesson with eagerness and actually accelerates their progress. I never push a student and instead encourage and edify the student and try to use their own favorite pieces of music to keep them excited about their next lesson. Acknowledging small progress is the key and I never let a student leave without celebrating their accomplishments no matter how small! Read More

Playing piano is my greatest reward in life, being able to bring a smile to a face of any age. After graduating from Cal Poly with a concentration in performance and theory, I was musical director of The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville theater. I was able to broaden my horizons performing, teaching, composing and arranging all different styles of music.and can even play piano upside down now! I was also music director of a local Christian church which has enabled me to become proficient in sacred/praise music as well. Read More

For beginning students, I choose Alfred's Basic Piano Library and Faber Piano Adventures, and other brands/materials that fits the need of the student. I often made teaching materials myself, as well as writing music for my students. The most important thing for beginners are keeping interest and correct postures. Starting from songs the student recognize usually helps. For advance students, I usually recommend repertoire covering all 4 classical periods, plus etudes and finger trainings. Read More
