Rather than being required to practice for a set number of minutes per day, we instead keep track of how many times an exercise or song is practiced. I emphasize consistent practice and repetition for all students, and I like to understand what music goals my students have - whether it is for private enjoyment or public performance, I do encourage everyone to push their boundaries and try something new on a regular basis. My preferred methodology uses the Alfred series books, as well as the Faber Piano Adventure series as supplemental material. I use a combination of note names and intervals to teach reading skills. I also like to incorporate theory into every lesson. Once we have the basics down, I like the student to tell me what he/she would enjoy playing, and I'll do my best to incorporate that, or something similar to that.  Also, I prefer that the student have access to a real piano rather than a keyboard.
