It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13. Along the way I have had the honor of meeting and learning from respected musicians such as Lawrence Jackson (former director of SU Bands), Herman Jackson (Brother of Randy Jackson), Jerry Lee Lane (Marching percussion pioneer) and countless others. Instruments: Piano

My teaching experience began while studying piano performance at SFA! At first, I was a little concerned with how I would manage as a student teacher; however, as the semesters went by, I fell in love with the process. I’ve grown to learn how each student is different, not only in their personalities, but the way they process what’s in front of them. The time they take to learn their material is very important to me, and the more I see them grow, the more accomplished and proud I feel as a teacher! Read More

Born in Los Angeles, Andy started playing piano at age five and by age thirteen, he was studying the viola as well. He played in his schools string orchestra, the Conejo Youth Symphony, and was awarded the opportunity to perform at the Music Teacher's Association convention in Sacramento. In high school, Andy started playing drums as a hobby but soon found it to be yet another instrument he was passionate about. Read More

Instruments: Piano

I use two pianos minimum for my lessons, along with recordings at multiple speeds in order to minimize the rhythmic mistakes so common in private lessons. Students are taught to make the connection between what they are playing and hearing, and what others are playing and hearing. Composition and Improvisation play an important roll in this connection, which is why I make it a part of every lesson. Theory is also taught, and testing is available for those interested, but it is only an option. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

Piano students: I usually use the Piano Adventures method, as I find it very methodical and balanced. In each class we do exercises to improve technique, sightreading, and performance along with music theory exercises. In a second part of the lesson we work on the songs having as main goal the creation of a repertoire that the student can play later to family and friends. I like to include some singing in my piano lessons too. Read More

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I have always thought the hardest thing to master on drumset is true four-limb independence. Styles such as jazz, salsa, and many Indian and African traditions require a high-level of proficiency of their rhythm instruments. So much slow and often tedious practicing is required to merely scratch the surface. It is difficult enough to work on two and three limb independence patterns and achieve a degree of fluidity. Four-limb independence requires an almost meditative, zen-like level of patience in your practice routine.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I like to think I have some pretty unorthodox teaching methods but inevitably using a great method book is one of the best ways to be inspired by new ideas. For drumset I often start with Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials and a Hal Leonard-type instructional book coupled with the classic Stick Control by George L. Stone. For voice training I have set warmups and exercises that are almost immediately implemented including the Vocal Ease app among other tools. For piano I inevitably supplement with Hanon exercises at some point. All of these methods have one thing in common: making the essentials of music fun and achievable while fueling creativity.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I don't often dwell on past accomplishments but there have been some notable musical experiences in my life. One of the moments I am most proud of is making first chair in Community College All-State Percussion and Jazz Band in the same year. The moment I found out the news instantly validated the countless hours I had spent practicing. Another ongoing accomplishment I am proud of is being a lead singer and drummer at the same time in my own band. It constantly challenges my abilities and stretches my musical awareness. Music (and art in general) has always had the ability to focus my time and energy in a way few other things can.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I believe singing chose me from an early age. It was a natural extension of myself and I was constantly interested in learning more melodies, songs and lyrics. Periodic voice lessons helped me to refine my technique and singing live helps me enjoy music in a very deep way. As for drums and percussion, I chose them because they are a part of almost every style of music in some way and because I wanted to be like the drummers I heard on my favorite albums growing up. Between singing and drumming I feel like almost every style of music is covered.
