For beginning students who are children, I always start with fundamentals in music thoery, then are then applied to the first exercises (Beyer and Czerny) and beginner-level pieces. Once the young student is ready, I will discuss about his or her personal taste, and find solo pieces that are suitable for the level acquired, but also enjoyable. For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. I start off lessons slowly with simple technical studies where the student can focus specifically on technique to efficiently and confidently. To help support this stage I typically introduce basic note reading skills to acquaint the students with musical notation while introducing them to playing in time. I administer exams to all my students which include the subjects of scales, chords, terms, theory and repertoire performance. Once a certain level is achieved I tend to diverge from method books and more towards individual larger-scale works. I like to give my students a solid classical foundation first, upon which thereafter I am open to exploring other styles of music including jazz, blues, gospel and popular music.
