Hello! I graduated from Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz Studies (their way of saying "Jazz Piano") in the spring of 2018. During my time at IU, I took both Jazz and Classical performance lessons, and played a myriad of music in those styles plus Pop, R&B, and Blues. I played in IU's esteemed Wallarab Ensemble (the school's top big band) for five semesters, and spent one year (the maximum alloted time for any student) in the Plummer Ensemble, IU's flagship jazz group which performs around the country. Joe just finished playing 2nd trumpet in The National Broadway Tour of Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway”. The show had its long run from October 2015 to July 2016 with performances all over the country. Joe has also transcribed many jazz artists solos, one which is featured in a Bugles Media Publications Book called The Improvisation Style of Jim Rotondi By: Eric Siereveld. For young beginners I typically with Suzuki Book 1 or the Abracadabra Flute Book.  For children preparing for NYSMA I use the Rubank method with supplements from Forty Little Pieces and gradually move on to more solo repertoire.  For adult students I make repertoire selections based on students' interests while taking care to keep lessons both engaging and fun no matter their starting level.  Although my training is primarily classical, I am happy to incorporate music from other genres into lessons. I firmly believe that experiencing music and being inquisitive are invaluable to learning how to play music. Studying music is not just about learning the material and regurgitating it, but discovering why a moment of music is cool and examining what about that moment makes it hit you in the right spot. I will be the guide that the student needs when he or she does not know where to go with his or her studies, but I want to encourage students to bring in music they want to learn, or discuss music that they think is cool and use that as a jumping off point into our lessons.
