My experience teaching started in college. I was lucky enough to be elected the Music Director of an all male a cappella group at Missouri State and much of my time was spent teaching vocal techniques, musicianship, and arranging to the group as well as individually. At this time, I was also the tenor section leader for the Missouri State Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. Guy Webb. I also teach hour-long group vocal classes seasonally. On average, I teach around 30 lessons a week, mostly 30/45 minute sessions, and several hour long sessions in addition to my group classes. The majority of my instruction takes place over FaceTime/Zoom, or in the student’s home. I just recently moved back to my home of Colorado from New York City. The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. I have found that this is not only the most effective way for me to teach but also the most effective way to connect with students where they are and for them to learn at their own pace while also enjoying the process. For beginning young students, I typically start with Music Tree or Piano Adventure. Once the student has progressed, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, after seeing their level of playing, I would find the style of music that they are interested in. If students are interested in learning specific music pieces, we can focus on that until feeling comfortable and confident then move on to similar style so we can keep that interest going then move on to more advanced pieces.
