I teach at the pace of the student, setting small achievable goals each lesson. I encourage students by acknowledging their progress and finding out what excites them. Students are encouraged to take what they've learned and participate in recitals, competitions, and any other musical opportunity they can find. I believe music should be taught as a means of personal expression, and so I also make sure to give students the tools they need to play in an expressive fashion, or even write their own music. It's really important to me that students enjoy what they are doing in music. It is a skill that has endless possibilities for creativity, expressing emotions, and connecting with others. This is what I want my students to learn and to bring with it a passion for music they can have for the rest of their lives. Students are provided with a lesson book from which the bulk of their assignments will come and a theory book containing written activities. As a general rule, a student will have one or two assignments from each book per week. The assignments are coordinated so as to reinforce concepts discussed in lessons. This allows the student to make connections between the lessons and the solo repertoire.
