I have been teaching on and off since 2010 and now teach almost exclusively from my home studio in Bloomington, IN. My main music philosophy is to teach sound before sight: teach students to hear the music, and then read the notation. For beginners, I want them to become well acquainted with their instrument so I begin with the basic fundamentals, and then teach some traditional tunes before moving on to reading music. For beginner students who are children I typically just want them to get comfortable with the piano keys and then find simple songs with simple patterns to get a grasp of hand placement, timing, and the joy of playing. For adults, I try to find out what they are interested in, e.g. (song structure, chord intervals, scales, hand technique) and adjust my lessons accordingly to help them meet their goals. Read More

I also like to acknowledge students improvements on things they have practiced. In my mind a student will never improve with intense mean criticism. There are several different method books that I like to use with my students based on age, knowledge/experience, and of course if the method book they use is something they will enjoy; it's very difficult if a student doesn't like the book they're using so I try to give them options. For beginners, I like to use John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course or the Schuam method books. For additional practice and work, I like to use Schaum's Fingerpower and have the student write out the notes then recite them aloud while playing the exercise. Read More

Over the past thirteen years, I have taught nearly 400 students - beginning as a junior in high school with four pianists. My teaching experiences have ranged from group lessons with fourth-grade, beginner clarinetists and saxophonists, to starting brand new five-year old pianists, to preparing high schoolers for competitive auditions and performances, to substitute lessons with adults. I actively seek to have my students play for people whenever they can (i.e. church, family gatherings), and I seek out and arrange more formal and organized events such as recitals or visiting the elderly and performing at retirement villages and nursing homes.
