I love to spend time with my students listening to some of their personal playlists and picking out songs from there for them to work on. Once I understand a student's taste, I love to show them other artists they may like and help expose them to new music. I try to balance the lessons with this type of work and more structured technical skill development. Music should be fun, exciting, and stimulating. Read More

The most important and rewarding aspect of teaching for me is ensuring that my students enjoy playing their instrument and develop a strong passion for their craft. Each student will need to work at their own pace, as everyone learns in a different way. Therefore, I encourage all of my students to set realistic goals and outline a practice routine and regiment that will not only allow them to reach their goals, but exceed them. Read More

My teaching method is to provide exercises, pieces, and etudes that are at an appropriate level for the student. I listen to my students play, and I comment on good aspects and any problems. During each lesson, I will explain how performance problems can be corrected. This will ensure that the student will develop good fundamentals for musical performance. The fundamentals that I teach are tone, time, rhythm, articulation, vibrato, finger technique, music reading, and basic music theory. Read More

I prefer to let students advance at their own pace so that they don't feel rushed and get discouraged. For younger students/beginners I keep an open line to the parents for extra support. I bring my instrument to the lesson and demonstrate as I teach. I center on encouragement and emphasizing a student's successes. I will change a lesson book/publisher if I sense that the student is either struggling with a particular book, or is not being challenged in a particular method and is becoming bored. Read More

I have been playing music since I was in 6th grade, and have been playing in bands on and off since high school. While I do not have an academic background in music per se, I have years of experience teaching children and adults, and I feel I can teach you just as well as I have taught my other students in the past, and honestly myself---I started playing saxophone (in 6th grade as I previously mentioned), and in more recent years I have started playing piano, guitar, and harmonica (in that order of competence). My teaching experience dates back in college. I never thought that teaching would be a passion of mine until I began teaching privately 7 years ago. The first question I like to ask my students is what inspired you to play the saxophone and what are their overall goals. Where do they want to reach and strive for when playing their desired instrument? Based on the students' goals, I will gear my instruction towards my the needs and desires of the student and give them the best experience possible I began teaching students from my church who were eager to learn the saxophone.
