Even though I am a jazz trombonist, I focus on finding music that students like, not that I personally want to play. For beginners, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument. Brass instruments are notoriously demanding, so making sure we have a solid grasp on the fundamentals is paramount. I like to start with the Essential Elements for Band and the Elementary Method for Cornet and Trumpet books. I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction.
