I know of the importance and rewards of a good music education. Playing a musical instrument can give a student much self confidence, relaxation and enjoyment. It is rewarding for me to work towards that goal for every student that I have the privilege of teaching. I share my positive musical experiences with my students so that they will continue to explore and appreciate performing and also listening to music. Read More

As a professional, state-licensed music teacher for over fourteen years, I began teaching in Carlsbad, New Mexico in 2001 before moving to Colorado in 2007 and serving in Douglas County School District, Denver Public Schools, and Jefferson County Public Schools. Encouraging students to practice on a regular basis is the cornerstone of musical growth and development, and I help especially younger students find the balance between popular music and classical music as a means of motivating practice and developing their skills. Hi! My name is Robert, and I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with some hopeful and aspiring young musicians in the Denver area!!!! I am very passionate about music, which is likely why I was never able to just stick to one instrument when I was in band in high school. My principal instrument is trumpet, but I play all woodwind, brass, and percussive instruments, and I sing. Read More

For beginners, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument. Brass instruments are notoriously demanding, so making sure we have a solid grasp on the fundamentals is paramount. I like to start with the Essential Elements for Band and the Elementary Method for Cornet and Trumpet books. Once we have the fundamentals, I like to start introducing some solo pieces, jazz, and pop tunes that will allow the student to get a feel for all the music they can play on this instrument! Music, at its most basic, should be fun, and I try to impart that to my students. Lessons with me involve jokes, fun music, and taking our music making to the extreme. In addition, I strive to teach music as a language; learning it both aurally and visually, developing an ear for music and self-evaluation while learning to read the notes on the page. I also see it as my duty to model what the student musician should strive to sound like, giving them an ideal sound in their head through frequent modeling. Read More

I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. I also encourage students to share with me and allow me to help them learn their favorite music, as well, even if that involves writing it out with or for them. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the fundamental book that they use at school in their band class. If the student is not in a class yet, I would recommend starting with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I also have a collection of fundamentals and warm ups that I have saved from my middle school, high school, and college years that I will use with students depending on ability level. For students of all ages and ability levels, I have found it to be helpful to know what kind of music they are interested in and incorporate that into my lessons. Read More
