Instruments: Piano Trumpet
The most important part of teaching for me is trying to make sure students are growing a passion for music, and that I am helping them in that way throughout the entire process. I've had teachers in my past that I felt didn't care for my interests, and were impatient with abilities, and those lessons always pushed me away from wanting to pursue music. As a private instructor, I want nothing more for my students than to see them flourish and succeed at their craft, but fun and passion always comes first in my book. Read More

For students learning their first instrument and learning how to read music, I like to spend the majority of the time buzzing on the mouthpiece, breathing, as well as studying and playing easy warm ups such as Remingtons. This way students can build their fundamentals for their instrument at the same time they are developing better reading skills. For more advanced beginners I have them read easy etudes to develop their reading and overall musicianship. Read More

Of course as a private instructor I have to make sure to steer towards something instructional value in these situations. This can be tricky, so even if something doesn't immediately present instructional value, I can extrapolate correlations, patterns, etc. that give a basic pop song or TV theme more instructional value. In terms of Adam, I realized after about a year working with him that the best lesson plan was more of an outline than a traditional lesson plan. Read More

My teaching style is very much praxial and based off of skill reinforcement. For any instrument, I will incorporate the Kodaly method (solfege) of musicianship into the curriculum. For me, my goal is to teach the student how to learn for themselves. I focus on practice techniques, assessment of tone, sound, rhythms, pitches, etc. Rather than spoon feed all of the answers to the students, I wish to encourage each musician to develop their own critical mind towards the art that they create. As a multi-instrumentalist, I've loved teaching piano, accordion, and brass instruments to all ages and levels the past +20 years. I've lived, taught, and performed around the world: after earning my bachelor of music in piano performance degree alongside my bachelor of music in horn performance degree in Kansas, I went to the New England Conservatory in Boston for my master's in horn. I was lucky to have received full scholarships for all my degrees. Read More

My style of teaching seems to be very relaxed. I never force anything and I always want to give inspiration and motivation to the students. I get more pleasure and comfort knowing that this is something they want to do for themselves and not something I or their parents are forcing them to do. I think this also brings out the best playing and create motivation for the student. When I am teaching I give lots of support and even like to play along to give the student confidence and know that this is something that even I would do in my own practice. Read More

With any student who is in a beginning sort of stage with their musicality, I will start off by teaching them basic techniques, simple notes or chords(dependent on the type of instrument), and rudimentary knowledge of the notational system. Once they have started to make some progress, I take a unique approach by asking them of their own opinion for where they would want to see themselves go. I do this to not only make it as exciting as possible for the student, but to help them achieve a vision they already have for themselves. Read More
