I have also worked with a contemporary community music school in San Diego with a "Rock" Focus, working with elementary and middle school drummers, vocalists, guitarists and pianists to form their own bands.Currently, in addition to teaching privately, I am an Arts Department Substitute Teacher for La Jolla Country Day School, working with both their band and orchestra programs in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. I have the goal of helping students look at music the way I do: with passion and inspiration. I encourage students to open their minds and set goals for themselves. For example, I would ask them the question, "By playing music, what do you want to accomplish?" I have asked this question to myself many times throughout my life thus far, and it has worked because I have accomplished so much. Read More

I always vary my teaching methods to accomodate each of my student's needs. However, my lesson format stays fundamentally the same. I always begin with some mouthpiece buzzing, which incorporates ear-training, then move to rhythm exercises, scales and technical studies, method book, and any other music the student is working on at the time. Most beginning students will start out with Book 1 of a standard method book; I recommend the Standard of Excellence series. Read More

My focus with each student is to tune into them in a way that I can then assess their physical, mental and emotional abilities. I ask each student what they want to learn with their instrument. If they do not know, we then start with the basics to establish a solid foundation in music with their instrument. Along the way, I ask the student what kind of music they like. Read More

For beginning students playing piano I typically start with Alfred's' Basic Piano Library, deciding on level when I learn about a students background in playing. On any brass wind instrument I will start with Measures of Success by FJH Music. It's important to me that students practice and understand the important of fundamentals in their music playing. A solid foundation provides students with the necessary tools to advance their musical career far past casually impressing friends with simple and redundant pieces. Read More

My vocal methods are rooted in bel canto style with a strong Melocchi technique using standard repertoire from art songs to stage to develop any voice in preparation for various styles of song. My goal is to help my students go from a singer to a vocalist so that they understand their instrument to be able to create any music as needed. As a piano method I draw from the FABER & FABER method books in addition to online repertoire resources from the standard piano literature varying in styles and difficulties from classical to the four chord structures used in many of today's popular songs and arrangements. I am goal oriented in my own career, so I instill the same mindset in my students. At the beginning of each month, we will have a check-in to establish both short-term and long-term goals. The previous month’s goals will be analyzed and our approach going forward will adjust accordingly to continue our trajectory. Musicians need a reason to practice. That is why I encourage my students to seek out performance opportunities in their homes and out in public. Read More
