I started teaching trumpet in my Senior year of high school. As I contiued into college I learned a great deal from some of the best trumpet players in the world. I had the great pleasure of studying under Allen Vizzutti while completing my degree from the Univeristy of Washington. I believe that students need to be taught to teach themselves. As a teacher, my role is to guide the student toward realizations with appropriate materials and information. However, the most beneficial learning occurs when the students feels they were an active participant in the discovery(ah-ha! moments). I can give students the answers, but I tend to use more leading questions to get them to figure out the solution on their own. Read More

While I stand by a need for fundamental work, it is also very important to understand what the student wants to learn. Upon the first meeting, I typically like to ask the student to show me what their warm-up routine is, and what they are currently working on. This gives me a good groundwork to customize lesson plans for each student. I will then ask them what skills they would like most to improve upon, as well as any new skills they would like to learn. My teaching approach focuses heavily on the fundamentals of the instrument and its relationship to Music... All students are different so I tend to approach slowly and access their reactions to my suggestions. It is so important not to make a student feel pressured to achieve, especially in Music... I want their interest and will to excel to be their own personal choice and quest. I think it is important for students to feel supported by their teacher as I will make myself as accessible as possible to answer any question or instill inspiring words to motivate their progress.
