Some of my instructional goals are keeping students motivated, cultivating an appreciation of music and instruments, guide students to find their own music style, improve confidence and self-esteem, and maintain a respectful and humorous environment. On a first lesson, i will assess where you or your student is in terms of playing ability, based on that we can decide what comes next. Typically, if a student is brand new we will start with learning the basics of the violin and reading music using various excerpts and hands on experience. Back when I was in Venezuela, I was playing in my city's orchestra the entire time from 2002 to 2018. In that orchestra, which is a part of the renowned "El Sistema". El Sistema is a system that helps underserved communities get the music knowledge they would otherwise not be able to get. We had different levels of orchestras, from beginners to advanced. Some highlights of my teaching career include working with A Gift for Music to give Title 1 schools access to the fine arts, being a cabin counselor and cello instructor for young musicians at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and providing private lessons at The Orlando School of Music. All these experiences created a burning desire for higher fine arts education, culminating in my part in the co-creation of the Central Florida Cello Association, an organization which provides the UCF cello studio with multiple masterclasses a year given by world class artists and acclaimed educators. For students beginning within the context of a school orchestra program, I prefer to begin within the pedagogical book of choice of the school program (e.g. Hal Leonard's Essential Elements) before branching out into other methods and repertoire such as the Suzuki school. For intermediate and adult students, I try to adapt repertoire and activity selection to his or her own interests, and find a balance between addressing important technique learning tasks and music that keeps the student excited and engaged. There is no need to slug away for months at a solo or exercise that doesnt match your personal interests or learning style.
