For beginning students who are children, I typically start with either Music for Little Mozarts Series or Piano Adventure Series with essential music theory related piano. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoires appropriate for their performance levels. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in first, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

I began giving music lessons at 21 while I was a student at Texas State University as an education major. My drum instructor invited me to return to the studio as an instructor. I have taught students as young as age 3, as well as adults, and everyone in between! As a special educator, I have also taught students with various abilities, including those with autism. My stance is that everyone, if motivated and given the right tools, can learn and make progress. Read More

I've been teaching in a number of different situations for about 4 years now. I first began teaching in 2010 when I worked at the Magik Children's Theater in San Antonio as an instructor for a School of Rock class there. In this class, I taught beginning students on guitar, bass, keys, and drums how to play popular rock songs. I worked at the Magik Children's Theater for 2 years before moving to California where I worked as a Teaching Assistant and a full time instructor for a number of theory/musicianship classes at the California Institute of the Arts. I am a passionate teacher who likes to have fun in lessons! My main goal as a teacher is to inspire my students to be the best they can be. I have found that the teachers that inspire me the most are the ones that I can laugh with or ask questions without the feeling of being talked down to. I want my students to ask musical questions and search for answers so that we can have active musical dialogue in our lessons. Read More

I also ask students what goals they have in learning the instrument, what they would like to be able to do in 6 months to a year. Based on that information, I move forward with music notation and performance. For this age group, I believe acknowledging their progress and achievement is critical. Smaller acknowledgements could be presented during a semester. Larger acknowledgements, such as a recital and reception, certainly can encourage a student to move forward. Read More

I am passionate about being a teacher and teaching students of all ages. I enjoy teaching classical music because it is a firm foundation for all other genres of music. If one can play classical, they can play anything. Read More
