I like to work with students individually for their own goals and skill level. For younger students, we work on msuciality and basics of singing through devleopmentally appropriate (and fun!) songs. Regardless of the student's level, each lesson contains singing repertoire, vocal exercises to work on technique, and musicianship skills. The combination of these elements will depend entirely on the student's needs and desires! As students progress in their piano studies, I begin introducing solo repertoire that will support the concepts being learned in the book series. I will also assign small writing projects from time to time, to sharpen students' compositional and music reading skills. I mainly use my own performing experience as a method to teach. I developed my own style throughout the years of performing...what works and what doesn't. But its all about experimenting, and getting out of the box. As a jazz singer, it's all about this. But I have studied classical and opera in college, so I have the knowlege of proper singing techniques, breathing techniques, etc. So with the combination of vocal experiences, there is a time and place for each type of singing, and I will pass that along to my students.
