For more advanced students, I like to lean towards assigning some transcriptions to learn, and hand-picking what artists' playing will benefit my students the most. For all students, I also enjoy diving into some music theory and explaining why things work and why things in music make sense! Most of all, I want to make sure my students are engaged, having a good time, and are given enough material to work with in and out of lesson time to make sure that they have the tools to be the best musician they can! In the first lesson, I like to find out about my student's goals. Regular lessons usually consist of reviewing exercises, etudes, and songs that were assigned from the previous lesson and then making adjustments as needed. The goal is to develop technique as well as overall musicianship so that every piece of music is played or sung well and beautifully. I like to follow an outline of skills basic to the instrument and to making good music but often adjust lessons based on the student's ability and personal goals, Read More

I usually like to get to know a student at first and see how they learn. I ask questions and get them making sounds right away to see how they use their bodies and how they naturally use their voice for speaking and such. From there I develop a plan for the best way to help them. I also like to identify their vocal goals (pop singing, opera, etc.) so that I know what direction they want to head and what kinds of tools I can offer them. Read More

I love to see my students growing their skills and their joy in singing, and me learning from them too! I love to give my best to all of them, and I love the challenge of knowing that is also my responsibility to grow their motivation and engagement as coach! I never understood the true importance of a mentor, till the moment I became one, and I witnessed the incredible empowerment for students who started to believe in themselves only because a mentor was believing in them first. I have over 12 years teaching experience both piano and voice to students of all levels and ages. When I work with a student, my first goal is to establish a positive, open dialogue where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new techniques or styles, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. From there, I prioritize developing a healthy technique in both singing and playing piano, emphasize musical literacy where we regularly work on reading notes on a modern staff notation (with all the accompanying vocabulary), and explore a wide range of repertoire that speaks to the student.
