Jamie S. is a teacher, guitarist, singer/songwriter, saxophonist, and composing pianist. His teaching career began at the age of fourteen, as a volunteer in the Songcatchers, Inc. program, teaching saxophone and piano to underprivileged children in New Rochelle, NY. He went on to study music at the University of Rochester/Eastman School of Music. In 2007 he did an eight-month internship at Island Def Jam/Universal Music Group whilst living in Harlem, after which he completed an independent study on the modern music industry, and was awarded the first ever Bachelor of Arts Degree in Popular Music and Jazz from Rochester/Eastman. As the student progresses, I include advanced exercises used to strengthen the voice and have them learn various styles of singing based on their interests and career path. Students are expected to vocalize every day on their own and complete any homework or songs before assigned dates. For my students, I like to see what type of music they are interested in and listen to a few of their favorite songs. From there we can learn chords (guitar, piano) and melodies for vocal lines. We could go the route of learning scales and theory, but since I didn't grow up learning that way, I'd prefer to go the more modern way by learning strumming patterns, chords, inversions, melodies and harmonies, and teach dynamics to make a song come together. From a family of musicians, I started playing the cello at the age of 5. After being a cellist for the Conservatory of Quebec Orchestra in Saguenay, I switched to percussion. I recorded the Flight of the Bumble Bee for the first time at age 14 and became a symphonic percussionist later with the National Art Center Orchestra of Canada as well as for the Ottawa Symphony while playing for the Starlighters and Savoy Swing Band at the Penguin cafe in Ottawa.
