For my VOICE students, I believe in the 5 steps method. This consists in 1. Relaxing, 2. Breathing, 3. Vocalization, also known as Vocal Warm-Ups, 4. Sol-fa, 5. Song Preparation. My voice students know that their voices is the only instrument that cannot be bought and replaced, and for that reason, we all need to take good care of it and educate it so it lasts forever. Vocal students are encouraged to pick songs from whatever genre sparks their interest.  With violin and viola I use the suzuki method of training and follow the books and lessons, and I use other books to supplement scales/technique.  If a student already has musical literature I am very open to using that to build a specific curriculum for that student. Although I began my musical career in the Suzuki method, I intentionally balance the ear-training approach of that method with music theory to create well-rounded musicians. My students will learn how to sight read music, improvize their own melodies, perform in an ensemble (chamber and/or orchestral) and master the art of performance with a solid foundation in music theory. I generally start off with Suzuki repertoire for beginning students, but supplement that with scales, positions exercises, dexterity exercises, and sight-reading material. Read More

Additionally, I have produced a handout I give my guitar students, which show chord families from different keys. I teach my students how to cipher out the key of a guitar song. Once the key is correct, the student looks at the chords within that key structure and goes more or less figuring out by ear the chord changes. I soon learned that students progress more quickly and with more confidence if they're given a program that was constructed just for THEM; so I teach each student with specific tasks and interests depending on their unique background. At the end of each lesson, I type out a summary of what we covered in the lesson, then some specifics about what to practice, for how long, and why. Read More
