Nothing is more rewarding that seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

I began by tutoring my fellow students during college. Little by little, I realized that I was becoming more passionate about seeing the students progress and achieve the goals they set for themselves. There is almost no greater feeling than accomplishing a goal, and even though I always acknowledge and encourage students on their accomplishments, I believe there's always another step to take, another skill to master. I also believe, especially with beginners, that rooting a students skill with the bare basics is essential to understanding music. Read More

I have my own ProTools recording studio, and I record 10 songs from each book for students to learn to play by ear. I make a CD and give it to the student. The CD holds about 30 tracks on it, the piano tracks and my speaking voice on each track. I speak on the CD gently underneath the piano playing, for example, when there is an interval, I slow things down and the student will hear my voice in the background saying Interval, then the student will hear me play each note of the interval separately. For beginning students playing piano I typically start with Alfred's' Basic Piano Library, deciding on level when I learn about a students background in playing. On any brass wind instrument I will start with Measures of Success by FJH Music. It's important to me that students practice and understand the important of fundamentals in their music playing. A solid foundation provides students with the necessary tools to advance their musical career far past casually impressing friends with simple and redundant pieces. Read More

I typically begin lessons by listening to a student and discussing goals. Each lesson consists of a warm up time, which includes learning proper posture, breathing technique and vocal placement. After warming up we will practice using those techniques while working on a song choice Read More
