I started learning piano when I was 6 years old in Japan. Then, I started to take singing lesson when I was 15 years old since my teacher taught both voice and piano. For University studies, I moved to California. I have received Music scholarships and have won singing competitions. I received my Master of Music from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Last 24 years, I have been living in San Diego. I have been teaching about 20 years. Read More

VOICE / SINGING In teaching voice and singing, my voice students receive a CD with vocal exercises that build up a singer's technique. I also hold one sheet handouts I give my voice students. Each sheet has a particular vocal skill to train. Also in teaching the voice, I use my recording studio. Sometimes a voice student can develop their vowels better if the song is in different paces, I use my recording studio and give the voice student a CD of the different tempos of the song. Read More

I employ a very eclectic, rotating repetoire. For beginning violin students, I use the Suzuki method of ear-training, however I am not married to that curriculum. I prefer to use beginning Suzuki materials in tandem with standard American folk and pop music, in accordance to the student's interests. I am qualified to teach all the way through Suzuki book 10 if the student prefers a more classical approach. Ear training is fundamental in my approach to all instruments and styles. Read More

Instruments: Voice

There are two major philosophies I've uncovered when teaching lessons. 1. The use of descending lines to erase the "break" in ones voice. Early while studying, myself, I was taught to sing ascending, trying to maintain the same sound - this is defeating. Rather, bringing the top down is the "way to go." 2. Keeping the sound forward makes changing from one vowel to another quite easy and palpable. We generally begin by humming, getting vibrations away from the throat and into the front of the mouth. Nothing is more rewarding that seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student's desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

<  My teaching experience includes public school, private schools, homeschool groups, and individual studio instruction. Most recently, I am an undergraduate music instructor.  I love performing but more that that I love to see my students embrace a lifelong love of music.  I employ a variety of hands-on techniques that engage students and use incentives to help them achieve success. In a collaboration with parents, I seek to know the student and set up a positive reinforcement dynamic. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
