For the past 5 years I have helped many singers, professional and young students in different styles of music, in classical, pop and mariachi. As a social service for my university I gave lessons to kids, and conducted choral pieces with senior students and adults. My cello students that are still in the beginning stages I like to have using the Suzuki books to help work towards more advanced music and skills. My voice students are all very different so I shape our lesson methods based on what style of singing theyre interested in, but we always begin working on proper breathing and learning solfege. My name is Shafer and I just moved from the East Coast this summer. I grew up in the Baltimore area and went attended Temple University in Philadelphia to obtain my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. There are two major philosophies I've uncovered when teaching lessons. 1. The use of descending lines to erase the "break" in ones voice. Early while studying, myself, I was taught to sing ascending, trying to maintain the same sound - this is defeating. Rather, bringing the top down is the "way to go." 2. Keeping the sound forward makes changing from one vowel to another quite easy and palpable. We generally begin by humming, getting vibrations away from the throat and into the front of the mouth.
