For beginners, I typically start students off with the suzuki books to build technique, but I teach them from the classical perspective rather than the suzuki method. With intermediate and advanced students, i will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for recital performance and/or a commercial piece (fiddle tunes, pop songs, etc) that the student is interested in learning. It personally took me more than a minute for my aha! moments. Every student is different and should be taught in the most positive ways. Theres no reason a student should feel rushed or down. We take singing lessons to learn ourselves and have fun mainly! Im a very visual learner so I tend to teach using some wild visual tactics.
