I first began teaching in high school at the suggestion of my own piano teacher. I loved the experience from the start - few things are more rewarding than watching a student develop their musical passion and skill from lesson to lesson. For Voice I cater my teaching to the student's goals and aspirations. The first 10-15 minutes of a lessons are spent doing vocal warmups and sightsinging exercises. The remaining time is spent working on repertoire that the student and myself choose together. For Piano I work out of the Faber Piano Adventure Books. I like to keep my lessons fun. I realize that technique can be dull and dry at times but is a necessity in learning music. I like to mix technique with songs and styles of music the student is interested in so they get a full understanding of why technique is important and how it applies to songs and musical selections that are of interest to the student. After college and marrying, I spent several years in Greece raising my daughters. There, I launched a career in teaching English. My students ranged in age from 3 years old to 65. My musical backround made the lessons fun. I helped organize concerts, musicals and performed with bands. I also welled with pride in watching my daughters participate in these events. . For beginning piano students, I usually employ the Faber or Alfred Series books. They are intuitive and the various books (Lesson, Theory, Technique, Performance, etc) complement each other well! They also have an "older beginner" series that is great for teens and adults that are new to piano. I also encourage my students to try composition, even if it is very simple melodies.
