As a musician, it is important to refine performance, technique, and style. I like to find out what the student's goal or difficulty is in each of those categories. Then we plan a recital usually 4-6 months away. I ask the student to choose 4-5 songs that they enjoy and that feel would be a feat to perform. As soon as it is appropriate, I also begin teaching fundamentals like scales, arpeggios, sight-reading, and supplemental technical training (Hanon exercises, for example).
