When I teach music, I make sure to emphasize sustainability. It's important to me that my students understand how to take care of their instruments, use resources efficiently, and appreciate the natural world that inspires music. I usually like to get to know a student at first and see how they learn. I ask questions and get them making sounds right away to see how they use their bodies and how they naturally use their voice for speaking and such. From there I develop a plan for the best way to help them. I was born and raised in Hong Kong and am fluent in Cantonese, English and Mandarin. I grew up singing in a well-established school choir and won multiple awards in the local school music festival as soloist, duet partner, and chorister. I was accepted at the Chinese University of Hong Kong with Honors at entrance and continued to garner merit-based scholarships during college and eventually graduated with First Class Honors. For the voice (as it is a built-in instrument) we work on expanding vocal range through warm-up exercises. It's important to identify the natural transitions throughout a student's voice, usually based on classical technique for healthy sound production. We will be able to reconcile the voice with the music that the student is interested in singing, all styles are welcome!
