The first half of a typical voice lesson is spent on vocal warm-ups and vocalises. These consist of scales, arpeggios, vowel unification, breath work, etc. and have been accumulated from many teachers over a variety of traditions. Vocalises are the most important part of a solid vocal technique. The second half of lessons is spent working on repertoire either brought in by the student or assigned by myself. To help students become familiar with rhythms, I occasionally use clapping exercises and even collaborate with them to create a song together. When I teach music, I make sure to emphasize sustainability. It's important to me that my students understand how to take care of their instruments, use resources efficiently, and appreciate the natural world that inspires music.
