I have occasionally taught lessons during brief stints off of the road, but playing on the road has been my primary job for most of my adult life. I work with each student to find songs which are appropriate for their voice, and songs they are excited about working on. While I do teach students to read music and teach the theory behind tunes and compositions that we learn, I think that the MOST important element in anyone's pursuit of musical proficiency lay in the ability to connect what one hears to what one plays. Ear training therefore is a large component.
