I will be the first to admit I don't have a set method for teaching. However that is because I choose different methods based on the student. Every child, adult, teenager, etc learns at a different pace, has a different educational preference and I adjust myself to meet the needs of the student. Some will learn better by ear, others will learn through a traditional study of notes. Most of my students will begin with a set of books from Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures or Alfred's Basic Piano Course, or a combination of both. I recommend that younger students take advantage of the Activity and Ear Training book that is a part of Alfred's Prep Course. They learn scales, intervals, vocal warm-ups, basic improvisation, repertoire (based upon requested style), different vocal techniques, arpeggiation and articulation exercises. For vocal technique I mostly use Bob Stoloff and Michelle Weir books, but I am always adding new material following today's industry. I also incorporate bacic production and arranging techniques, so my students have an opportunity to produce their songs and creat online profiles with their songs. As a guitar teacher, I like to start with getting the student accustomed with each string, including how to tune a guitar and how to play different notes on each string. Next, I start teaching chords by starting with E minor and then moving as little as possible with the fingers so the student can understand the relation between certain chords. To help students become familiar with rhythms, I occasionally use clapping exercises and even collaborate with them to create a song together. When I teach music, I make sure to emphasize sustainability. It's important to me that my students understand how to take care of their instruments, use resources efficiently, and appreciate the natural world that inspires music.
