My practice is an evidenced-based one. I chose exercises that are specifically tailored to a certain vocal idea or skill that we are working on. From there, we modify the exercise to meet the needs of the student's unique body and other student specific needs (i.e. previous habits, personality type, etc.). A voice lesson to me to should be easygoing and open, while having a task to accomplish. I encourage my students to enter my studio with an open mind and feel free to explore artistically. We set goals together and progress vocally with each song. I have an extensive library of music as well which my students are free to use to find new material. I like to motivate the students to learn. I will teach fundamentals and theory through teaching guitar, voice or piano. However, the most important matter for me is the passion that I have for performance and I pass it to my students as I teach music. My biggest reward is seeing my students passionate about their voice, their instrument, their music. I focus a lot on understanding music from the piano so I feel very happy when they can demonstrate good musicianship skills in challenging settings. For this to happen I usually set up small objectives for each class and help them set new goals during their own practice time that will allow continuous improvement during our next lesson.  For example, being able to sing a 3rd with just playing the tonic or dominant notes. I love teaching and helping students reach their potential.  I have been teaching music for over 40 years.  I teach beginning to professional level voice lessons from folk and pop to Broadway and Opera. I also teach beginning level piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and guitar. My students understand the voice and voice production. My approach is always to encourage a student to stop using language like that was bad or that sucked. Its not the best or most productive way of getting you freer and singing with less tension or nerves. What I look to motivate in a student is becoming aware of any tension or nerves and explore where it comes from. Become an analyst.
