I am a compassionate instructor and am excited to share my love of music with my students. My philosophy is that the student comes first and the music comes second. I attended Oklahoma City University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Musical Theatre. After leaving OCU I studied further voice lessons from Michael Crowley, a former member of the company at the Metropolitan Opera. I have played piano since I was 5 years old. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Music

My teaching experience began in high school, as I began teaching children in a group setting. I worked at a children's educational summer camp where I instructed choirs and chorus singers for Musical Theater. During my time at OCU, I taught private voice lessons to students with diverse vocal goals. I have found that the best way to teach singing is to let your students sing! While discussing technique and concepts is important, it can never replace the experience of practicing with your voice. Read More

I will also help a student with any outside pieces for school or the community. Piano Lessons: For beginning students who are very young, I start with Bastien Piano Basics or Hal Leonard Essential Elements. For adults/teens, I use the KJOS Bastien book for adults or the upper level books by Hal Leonard. I also have my students play popular pieces or holiday pieces of their choosing in addition to their classical repertoire. Read More

I understand that many people take voice lessons recreationally, and that not everyone trains like a college student. I do, however, encourage all my students not to sell themselves short and set high standards for themselves. I acknowledge any and all progress that is made, and encourage my students to be proud of the sound they are making. If you don’t like your voice, then you certainly won’t sing for someone else. Music is a language! I teach music in a similar manner as we learn to speak. We learn to speak through trial and error having no wrong words and music should be taught in a similar fashion, where there are no wrong notes. We learn our speaking style, manner and/or accents by what we hear and this concept also applies to music; therefore listening is a crucial part for advancement and the pleasure of learning. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
As a voice teacher and entrepreneur, I firmly believe that effective practice is essential for progress and success in vocal development. Here's some advice I offer to my students and clients: Consistency is Key: Consistent practice, even if it's just a few minutes each day, is far more beneficial than sporadic, marathon sessions. Set aside dedicated time each day for vocal practice to build muscle memory and maintain progress. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity: Practice with intention and focus on quality rather than quantity. Pay attention to proper technique, tone production, and interpretation of the music. It's better to practice a small section of music thoroughly than to rush through an entire piece. Warm-Up Properly: Start each practice session with a thorough vocal warm-up to prepare your voice for singing. Focus on exercises that target breath support, vocal range, articulation, and resonance to ensure a healthy and efficient vocal production. Break It Down: Break down challenging passages or songs into smaller, manageable sections. Practice each section separately, focusing on technical accuracy and musical expression, before gradually piecing them together. Use Recording Tools: Record yourself during practice sessions to listen back and assess your performance objectively. Pay attention to areas that need improvement and make adjustments accordingly. Recording tools can also be helpful for tracking progress over time. Stay Hydrated and Rested: Proper hydration and adequate rest are crucial for vocal health and stamina. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and get enough sleep to ensure your voice performs at its best during practice sessions. Mix It Up: Keep practice sessions varied and engaging by incorporating different vocal exercises, repertoire, and styles of music. Experiment with vocal improvisation, sight-reading, and vocal exercises to keep your practice routine fresh and stimulating. Seek Feedback: Don't hesitate to seek feedback from your voice teacher or trusted peers. They can provide valuable insights, constructive criticism, and encouragement to help you refine your vocal technique and interpretation. Set Realistic Goals: Set realistic and achievable goals for your practice sessions and vocal development. Break down larger goals into smaller milestones and celebrate your progress along the way. Stay Positive and Patient: Finally, maintain a positive attitude and be patient with yourself as you progress on your vocal journey. Remember that improvement takes time and dedication, so trust the process and enjoy the journey of learning and growing as a vocalist.

How To Tune A Guitar

...other keys can be somewhat difficult.     C-G-C-F-C-E Beloved songwriter Nick Drake often used this alternate tuning. It’s featured in his most famous song, “Pink Moon,” and it’s usually referred to as open C tuning.     C-G-C-F-A-D     Typically referred to as Drop C tuning, this alternate tuning is widely used by rock and heavy metal music. Tuning the guitar this way brings the instrument’s range down into a bass guitar range, and gives guitarists the ability to play low hard-hitting power chords.   G-G-D-G-B-D   This tuning is found in The Rolling Stones songs “Brown Sugar”... Hey There Delilah Chords for Acoustic Guitar (Plain White T’s)

...Chords Chart   I’ve included a Hey There Delilah chords chart, which is a simple road map that shows you:   The overall arrangement of the song. A section by section breakdown of the song. Each chord and how long to play it for.   If you don’t read music, please don’t be intimidated. This is a cheat sheet that can help you get through the tune quickly and easily. I find it indispensable for learning songs and I can also hand it to a seasoned musician and they can follow along without any problems.   Song Form Intro: A 4-measure pattern: Measure 1 (D5 for 4 ... Cremona Violins: Innovative and Artistic Instruments

...the Duke of Mantua. And this is exactly how the Cremona violins were promoted throughout Europe. John Waddle noted that “Cremona [was] where the musicians were. They were good.” From Cremona, these musicians and their instruments went all over Europe – Vienna, Paris, and Prague, to name a few. Catherine de Medici (Queen and later Regent of France) was a great promoter of the arts, and her son, Charles IX of France, ordered 38 instruments from the Italian Amati.   The Cremona Violin Tradition Continues Guarneri and Stradivarius were well prepared for this culture that appreciated fine instrument making. Open-String Guitar Chords

...don’t expect you to know the names, or what they mean, at this time. I do this to make you aware of the fact that there is a name or proper term for everything that we do when learning how to play the guitar. The Gmaj7 chord is played using your 2nd finger on the 1st string, 2nd fret. Same as before, strum the top 3 strings. Use down strums, strum each chord 4 times and maintain a steady rhythm. The next chord is a G7 and this is played using the 1st finger on the 1st string, 1st fret. Use down ... Read More

How to Write a Song

...tricky for a lot of folks. Writing melodies is a skill that seems to elude a lot of musicians, and I have a theory about why. To write a good melody, you’re going to need to get comfortable with the idea of singing half-baked ideas out loud. Understandably, this makes lots of people uncomfortable. This is why I recommend that you not take yourself seriously when you write your first couple of songs. Singing about something funny, mundane or unimportant will prove to be easier to do more than singing about important emotional topics. These are songwriting exercises, and the less ... Read More
